The new media landscape offers wonderful opportunities for communicating –but there
are also dangers and pitfalls, often largely unrecognized.

Unless you understand this stimulating, dangerous, challenging new world you or your
company could fall victim. What’s different today is that the old internal company firewalls
no longer exist.

In many recent incidents we have seen the impact on ship owners, managers, crew members,
rescue services and/or members of the public posting images and messages on
the internet. (Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, etc.). Most seafarers today have camera
phones and have use of the internet on-board, in one form or another the situation will
continue to get more difficult to manage. In 2013 it is a sensitive issue to forbid seafarers
to use their mobile phones or contact their families in the event of an emergency, so
proper use of the internet is largely a matter of education.

Speed and instant global exposure without a hearing, a trial or a judgment can turn
your company, or you personally, into an international figure of ridicule and fun via traditional
media, social media or trade press.

Our Masterclass is not designed to be a media training course but an inter-active session
that will give an insight into both current issues and effective media response principles
for senior management, ERT members and designated company spokespersons .
